PARTICIPATION IN OCCUPATION TWO - 2011

Hi there,

Im back for another lot of postings, keeping the the theme of participation in occupation (this time looking more at my own involvement).

The brief: Students will maintain a blog which consists of six postings of approximately 300 words. The blog will be a record of participation in the students chosen activity.

I will look at the activity in terms of the ergonomics; ambience; affordances and practical considerations.

As part of the assessment, i will be posting on other peoples blogs, so please feel free to do the same for me!

Tutorial Eight: Assistive Technology

This week - Assistive Technology ...

We had an amazing practical session this week. Really enjoyed it and it was a great eye opener!! Can’t wait to be qualified and be able to help people with all these amazing tools that are out there that people don’t know about !!!!

Heres some questions that followed this session...

Provide a definition of Assistive technology

Assistive technology is any

" Item, piece off equipment or product system whether acquired commercially of the shelf, modified, or customized that is used to increase or improve a functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities" Susan Hussy, Albert Cook. (2000). Assistive Technology: Principals and Practice. Mosby.

Describe one piece of equipment introduced in the assistive technology tutorial. Provide information on size, cost and functions. How does your chosen piece of equipment increased functional capacity for the user?

One piece of equipment I found interesting was the Big Mac button. It can be used in an array of ways which I think is great.

From turning on appliances to recording sounds or phrases the possibility of clients that this could be useful for is endless and even helping to make someone that much more independent to the point in which they can feel they have contributed.

The Button itself is roughly 20cm round, bright in colour and easy to push. it has wires which allow it to be plugged in to things such as a blender to turn it on instead of using the switch. It can also be used in communication by recording information for up to 20seconds and then pressing the button to hear it.

Tutorial Seven: Blogging Part Two

Hi guys,

This blog is going to show you how to post a Digital Photo Badge...

This is done through using flickr...


1. Log in to your Flickr Account.

2. Upload pictures on to Flickr

3. Down the bottom in the Help line go to tools .

4. On the Right go to "Hey, Where is the badge?" Click on this.

5. Click a Flash Badge - Click Next

6. Set the layout options.

7. Choose the back ground Colour for you badge.

8. Get the code to copy and paste into your website .

9. Go into Blogger, up the top click Customise.

10. Click on Add a Gadget link.

11. A new pop up will be on your screen click HTML/JavaScript

12. Give you badge a name and past the code into the main body

13. Click the Save button

14. Your badge will now be on your blog. Click View Blog ... and WOW!!!!!

Tutorial Six: The internet and online communities

HIIIIIIII!!!!!!!......

So this week were looking at something that I know most people have heard of or even belong to... FACEBOOK!!!!!!!

Facebook is an online community that millions of people belong to all over the world.... which is kind of cool but just means we have to be very careful too. Not everyone out there can be completely trusted.

What is the brief or focus of this community?

"Facebook's mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.

Millions of people use Facebook everyday to keep up with friends upload an unlimited number of photos, share links and videos, and learn more about the people they meet.

What services are provided? How interactive is this site? How can people contribute?

-Interaction with loved ones, friends or family.

-Publish up coming events.

-Email

-Track Friends or family down using search

-Add Pictures/movies or things of youtube

On face book people are able to blog, write about there day or can write about anything really. There is no strict rule. Usually I personally write short notes about what happened on the weekend or what I’m up to that day. On these posts, people are able to add comments, *like* what your saying or leave small icons such as smiley faces.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment on why people choose to contribute to this community. What is it they are seeking?

Facebook allows us to keep in contact without having to physically be there. People can have disscussions lasting for weeks. it is quick and conveniant, perfect for our busy lives as it is also accesable from mobiles.

The main thins that I think that comes with using a site like facebook is how much information that we freely give out about ourselves. Personally i have experienced my account being hacked, i imediatly changed my password and put a note up saying my account had been hacked. None of my information was changed but this does not mean someone may use it in other places. Being careful not to give away passwords and usernames is really important. Identity theift, although it sounds like something out of a movie is becoming more and more popular.

People are also able to look thorugh any photos you may post and also comment them, tag them or copy them onto their own profile. By using the privacy settings this will help stop this.

You are also able to have convisations, somewhat similar to MSN on facebook. If you are logged on, who ever you are friends with on facebook can see this.

Making sure you are logged off after use, if on a public commuter especially will help to keep people out of your account too.

Personally l use face book and find it really handy. However, there is nothing like being able to havea face to face chat with somebody for proper interaction and they emotion. Facebook is great but does not offer this. i enjoy being able to keep contact with family and friends easily and quickly. However, there are risks in disclosing lots of information about yourself in a very accessible place. Have fun but be safe!!

An added Extra: Work and Leisure

Hi there,

This week I’m looking and work and leisure. We looked at a slideshow around traditional work and leisure, technology, work culture and the exponential nature of change, challenges and boundaries of work and leisure and implications for OT practice.

Work and Leisure:

We were given the following definition of work...

"Activity producing an enduring object. Work requires self-investment, skill, craft and personal judgement. Work is purposeful and meaningful. Work is distinct from labour and must be discovered independently from one's job"

T.F Green (1968)


To me this is a good explanation of work, however in relation to those who struggle with independence and other factors mentioned in this example, I do not think that this applicable to the work in which these people would participate.


Leisure however, is a good example in relation to the OT practice. 'Making time for ones self' and enjoying tasks not to do so much with work.


So ... what's the link between Technology, Labour, Work and Leisure?

With the introduction of technology, there has been an exponential change which is showing that change is increasing at double the fold of time increasing. (Seidensticker, B. 2006. p. 111), meaning that technology has had a huge effect on the world around us and how we complete our work, labour and leisure.

Although change around technology has increased, we still are reliant on fundamental technology’s which include things such as food and shelter. This will not change.


In relation to OT

Technology used by OTs ...

-Through technology we have tools in which we are able to help clients.

-Open to Adapt and Change.

-Using technology can come with benefits but there are also risks that come with it.

-Asking questions - clients

- Families


(All this information is just a small break down from this week’s tutorial. There was a large amount of information all very useful, I have drawn on the parts I see most interesting.)

1. Why do you think Wii gaming has appeal to people who are not traditional video game players?

The wii game is not the traditional video game. The wii comes with a wireless controller, which can be used as a handheld pointing device and detects movement in three dimensions. It is completely interactive and can be used for not only the purpose of gaming but for exercise, internet and as a competitive outlet.

There is a series of add on’s that you can purchase to go with the wii console such as the exercise plate. This allows the wii to go from merely a game to a in home gym, being able to do things from palates to hula hooping.

2. What is the relevance here to occupational therapy?

The Wii could be seen as a great tool for all ages and abilities. Working with children it is a fun way to encourage movement of limbs and keeping active and for elderly a great way to keep joints moving, small amounts of physical strength and a way to just have fun.


However, being realistic, although wiis in rehab centres or places where funding might not be such of an issue, the cost of buying a wii can be expensive and sometimes unrealistic when returning home.

Tutorial Four and Five: Video Production Sessions

Hi Bloggers,

So this week our task was to create, edit and put online a video. This task sounds much easier than what it was believe me!!! However here’s some info about YouTube, an amazing internet service where we can put videos of almost anything on to show the world.

- Provide a brief account on how the use of planning (storyboarding).

Before any movie starts whether it be our short 30 sec film or a motion picture begin there is a huge amount of planning that is done to make peoples lives a whole lot easier. One really useful tool is to storyboard. This is when you plan each shot and put it in a sequence drawn up on a board. This allows shots to flow and for everyone to have an idea of what’s actually happening.

This week’s lesson was really neat and related well to my high school photography classes... made me want to get back into the visual arts actually.
